Talking REITs, Income Investing & My Investment Journey – This Time, in Chinese!

Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down for another video interview with SmallCapAsia (and on this note, a big thank you to Xinying for the invite!).

This interview was a little different from the previous one, though – it was conducted entirely in Chinese! In fact, this was the first time I shared my humble 2-cents worth about my investment journey in the language.

In this close to 30-minute video, I discussed a range of topics, including:

  • What inspired me to start my investment blog, The Singaporean Investor – particularly some of the challenges I faced when I first started learning how to analyse individual companies, and how those experiences eventually led me to start the blog.
  • Why I decided to focus on building an income-oriented investment portfolio – and why my portfolio is largely concentrated in 2 sectors: REITs and banks.
  • The multiple headwinds that REITs have had to contend with since 2020 (many of which were beyond management’s control), as well as my outlook for the sector going forward. Could we finally be seeing some light at the end of the tunnel?
  • Why REITs generally delivered a weaker performance between 2020 and 2024, along with my thoughts on what could lie ahead for the sector, particularly as renewed inflationary pressures have once again raised concerns over the possibility of interest rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve.
  • 3 types of REITs that I remain optimistic about for the second half of FY2026, along with the reasons behind my views. That said, there are also several potential risks investors should keep a watch on, which I shared in the video as well.
  • How I select REITs for my portfolio, where my evaluation is centred around 4 key areas.
  • One of the biggest and most common mistakes I see retail investors make, particularly those who are new to investing, as well as what they can do to reduce the likelihood of making the same mistake.
  • How my investment mindset and strategy have evolved over the years as a retail investor navigating the ups and downs of the market, where I highlighted 2 key changes in particular.
